The most ancient light visible, such as from type
1a supernovae, began its journey in denser, 'hotter' space, then propagated into 'our' less-dense, 'cooler' space. Naturally it lost amplitude in its journey across the density gradient.. resulting in the SN1a appearing 'dimmer than they should be'.
"Ever-accelerating expansion" of the universe becomes a grand illusion. The expansion curve is shifted towards DEcelerating expansion and a Closed universe.
"Dark energy" was an ad hoc attempt to describe the reason for "ever-accelerating expansion".
Also, the need for inflation theory disappears as if by magic. "Inflation" was an ad
hoc attempt to resolve the horizon problem and the flatness paradox under the Void-Space Paradigm (VSP).
The VSP recognizes no PDT* gradient in the spatial medium, since its fundamental doctrine holds that there is 'no medium'.
When the spatial medium and the cosmological PDT gradient are recognized, it will also become apparent that there are also 'tiny' PDT gradients locally, in the gravity wells of stars. This will explain the anomalous accelerations of the Pioneer (and other) spacecraft.

* The 'Temp' of the spatial medium is not thermal temperature of matter. 'Temp' is a function of the pressure/density of the medium of space, hence the acronym PDT. Out in deep space farthest from any mass, where thermal temperature is lowest, the PDT value of space is highest.

The universe-filling Plenum of space (as opposed to the "void" of spece) is under a state of hyperpressurization exceeding degeneracy pressure of the atomic nucleus. This hyperpressure state is called the 'supra-cosmic overpressure' or SCO. The SCO's ambient value is the same as the PDT value of deep space in our 'local' supercluster environs (represented in the above graph by the "present" mark).

The SCO is the 'Key in the Lock' to unifying all the fundamental forces including gravity. The fundamental forces are but different manifesations, at different levels, of One Flow driven by One Force, the SCO, in the Unified Field of Spatial Flows.

General Relativity is currently 'flat' because it describes a universally-isotropic "Nothing" all the way back to the BB. Locally, this 'flat' GR works very well _in the absence of any PDT gradients_. But as with the flat Earth, the model begins breaking down when a gradient enters the picture.
Recognizing PDT gradients will bring
GR out of its present 'flat' status. GR is currently 'flat' because it recognizes no such gradients. Factoring in PDT gradients is the natural Upgrade of GR, just as relativity itself is an upgrade of Newton.
While GR recognizes a drop (or "dilation") of both lightspeed and the clock-rate with increasing depth in a gravity well, it cannot explain _why_ the drop occurs. It occurs due to diminishing PDT value (thinning) of space as it stretches while accelerating toward the gravitator. Mass is synonymous with flow sink (or pressure drain), like a 'venturi' to the hyperpressurized spatial medium venting down to its lowest pressure state.
At a black hole's event horizon, the clock rate and lightspeed drop to zero as observed from our seat 'out here' at Earth. We see the BH as a 'Frozen EM Blackbody' (or FEMBB). Yet there AT its event horizon, the clock rate and lightspeed are normal. Then from the OTHER direction, at the point of emergence from the Big Bang, lightspeed and the clock rate are "infinite" and begin their precipitous plunge, gradually leveling out to their present ambient value (per the graph above).
Let this Upgrade of GR be called GR2.
GR2 is all about explaining the _mechanism_ whose effects GR merely *describes*.
The natural Upgrade of Special Relativity also entails recognizing gradients, most prominently the cosmological PDT gradient. Just as SR holds c constant in all inertial frames, the Upgraded model holds c constant PDT frames as well.
Yet there *is* a precipitous drop in the speed of light from the instant of the BB down to its present speed. This drop is what Gordon Wolter called 'c-dilation'. Properly understood, 'c-dilation' is _as observed from the 'outside' referance frame_, from "outside" the univese. Yet here 'inside', c is always constant 'here' locally, just as it is constant 'there', locally. The prime variable from 'there' to 'here' is the PDT value of space. At our seat here 'inside', we observe *artifacts* such as the excessive dimming of the most distant 1a supernovae.
Notice that two distinct referance frames are involved. Recognizing 'c-dilation' across the PDT gradient does not violate the Lorentz invariance, or any other constant for that matter.
TIME DILATION (slowing of the clock rate) runs concomitantly with 'c-dilation', and is likewise _as seen from the 'outside' frame_, while here 'inside', we observe their artifacts in the excessive SN dimming.
And lastly, diminishing PDT value of space is concomitant with EXPANSION of space (whether expanding forth from the BB or 'stretching' like a "starburst in reverse" as it accelerates into a gravitator).
Let the Upgrade of SR be called SR2.
With its feature of 'c-dilation', SR2 brings relativity full circle. SR2 and GR2 are recognized as one and the same thing
